NAHJ Region 5 Conference is a huge success

More than 130 attended the daylong NAHJ Region 5 Conference on Saturday, March 1, at Texas State University in San Marcos.

NAHJ Region 5 includes Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, but some attendees came from far away as Phoenix, Miami (2), Washington, D.C., Columbia, Miss. and Carbondale, Ill.

The conference began Friday, Feb. 29, with a town hall meeting on the upcoming elections, “What can Brown do for you?.” The panelists included Garry Mauro, Texas chairman for the Clinton campaign; State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, representing the Barack Obama campaign; Lydia Camarillo, vice president, Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP); Andy Hernandez, executive director, Wesley Center for Family and Neighborhood Development; and Dr. Federico Subervi, professor and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media & Markets at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University.

The town hall meeting was sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

On Saturday, the multimedia sessions included podcasting, blogging and digital video, along with the traditional sessions geared toward Spanish-lanague media; broadcast and print media.

Gilbert Bailon, editorial page editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was the keynote speaker at lunch. Bailon spoke about the changing times, and how journalists need the tools to survive in their newsrooms.

The sponsors for Saturday’s events included Univision KAKW 62 in Austin and Univision KWEX 41 in San Antonio; San Antonion Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ); Houston Association of Hispanic Media Professionals; Austin American-Statesman and San Antonio Express-News.
