María Elena Salinas to Keynote 2020 NAHJ Virtual Graduation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 1, 2020 María Elena Salinas to Deliver 2020 Virtual Graduation Keynote for Next Generation of Latino Journalists

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Director of Next Gen. Initiatives, Leslie-Anne Frank, announced an upcoming virtual graduation celebration on June 6 to commemorate the NAHJ graduating college seniors, and their families, friends, and colleagues.  Following distancing recommendations dictated by the CDC, graduations across the country to date have been altered, canceled, postponed, or held virtually.

The nation’s largest association for Hispanic journalists will honor NAHJ member college graduates on June 6 at 1:00 PM ET.  Multiple commencement addresses will be given by industry leaders in the field to share advice and words of inspiration to the Class of 2020. Students will hear remarks from special keynote speaker María Elena Salinas alongside Maria Hinojosa, José Díaz-Balart, Fin Gómez, Robert Hernandez, Obed Manuel-Estrada, Joy Diaz and more.

Graduating from a higher education institution is an incredible accomplishment, and NAHJ student members deserve to be celebrated. Most NAHJ students encounter many hardships during their college careers.  A variety of graduates are from low-income households, are first-generation students, children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves.

Despite any challenges, NAHJ students are resilient and dedicated. It was a choice to pursue higher education — knowing the journey would not be easy. The Class of 2020 has succeeded, and are the future of our industry. The careers that await this generation will take them to places where they will impact the industry and Latino communities.

“We are proud of all our NAHJ students and have worked closely with them to witness their growth and ability to overcome many challenges in their college career,” said Frank. “We are excited to hold this virtual celebration and show our tremendous pride for all of our student members.”

“Our mission is to help the professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry,” said Alberto B. Mendoza, NAHJ Executive Director. “We focus heavily on our students and are committed to being there from the beginning of their careers.

Young journalists play an essential role in the field. On June 6, NAHJ invites all community members to join and watch this memorable event.
