NAHJ Statement on the Signing of the Fallen Journalists Memorial Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 24, 2020

(Washington, D.C.) – The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) thanks those who supported the Fallen Journalists Memorial Act and recognizes President Trump for signing the law.

The Fallen Journalists Memorial Act authorizes ‘the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation to begin planning and raising funds for the memorial’s construction, which will be the first of its kind in the nation’s capital.’ The memorial will honor journalists who have been killed while working and recognizes the freedom of the press and the central role it plays in a democracy.

As many have acknowledged during this process, an observance such as this demonstrates a country that values a free press and honors the victims and families for their sacrifice.  Representation is crucial in this memory so that the public and industry can sanctify journalists like Rubén Salazar and so many others whose lives are taken in search of the truth.
