In a historic move by ABC News, NAHJ member Cecilia Vega promoted to Chief White House Correspondent

(Washington, D.C.) – The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is thrilled to learn Cecilia Vega has been named Chief White House Correspondent for ABC News. Vega is the first Latina to serve in this position for an English language television network, making ABC News the first major broadcast network to make such a promotion. During her career at ABC News, she led coverage of both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders during the 2016 presidential campaign. In her coverage of the Trump administration, Vega fearlessly challenged the president on the nation’s most pressing topics, with issues ranging from immigration to Russia.

Given her extensive background covering historic events and a tireless work ethic, the promotion of the longtime NAHJ member and former recipient of the NAHJ Presidential Award of Impact comes as no surprise. Vega’s promotion furthers the representation of Latinas in media, and also carves out further career possibilities for those who will follow in her footsteps.

NAHJ President Nora López says, “We are proud to see Cecilia Vega rise to this position. As someone who has demanded visibility for the Latino community, especially during the Trump administration, Vega has the experience, professionalism and tenacity to continue her exceptional coverage of the White House during the transition to the Biden administration.”

Vega’s promotion is another step toward more diversity in hiring and representation in newsrooms, bringing a much-needed perspective to journalism at the national level. While the appointment is belated, her leadership and commitment to excellence make Vega more deserving of her new position. NAHJ looks forward to the strides she will make in bringing awareness to the issues that impact the more than 60 million Hispanics and Latinos living in the United States and a global understanding of our community’s power.
