Opening for palabra. managing editor position; Deadline for applications August 15.

NAHJ seeks to hire an experienced journalist/editor to direct and manage the palabra. news website on a parttime basis. Duties include oversight of all aspects of the news operation, as follows:

  • Manage a community of freelance journalists, deploying a strong vision
for palabra.’s future in digital, video and audio journalism.
  • Search NAHJ’s network and your own professional networks for contributions from
talented news veterans and up-and-coming storytellers.
  • Evaluate story ideas submitted to palabra., and then shape the print, video and audio
stories that are relevant and resonant for palabra.’s general, national audiences.
  • Maintain a schedule of publishing two stories a week, with natural exceptions for more
when events call for it, or fewer during natural breaks like major holidays. The midweek
story has traditionally been the newsier selection, with the Saturday story billed
    as palabra.’s “weekend read.”
  • Monitor palabra. for accuracy, adherence to ethical journalism standards and the
    avoidance of potentially libelous material.
  • Contractor agrees to abide by the SPJ code of conduct for journalists.
  • Coordinate the work and payment of contract editors, copyeditors, translators, graphics
    journalists, photographers and illustrators.
  • Organize stories into Google Docs collections that are then delivered to the palabra. Web
team for posting on the website. And continue to work with the team to make sure
content and layout are presentable and accurate, and that a strong social media campaign
is launched for each story. Update web stories for accuracy on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintain records of content contracts and coordinate payments to contributors with
    NAHJ staff.
  • Represent palabra. in current and future collaborations, such as the URL Media Network,
the Southern News Collaborative (run by the Texas Observer) and the Ford Foundation’s
    Border Voices project.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities on behalf of palabra. and with NAHJ Executive Director.
Assist NAHJ ED with development of annual palabra. budget.

NAHJ is publisher of palabra. and the managing editor reports to the Executive Director. This is a 12-month contract position that pays $4000 monthly.
