NAHJ/CBS News 2023 Summer Internship

NAHJ is now accepting applications for the  NAHJ/CBS News and CBS Sports 2023 Summer Internships. The  internships have the following components:

  • Interns are paid a competitive hourly rate 
  • Interns must be available full time between June-August (35-40 hours a week)
  • Internship will be held in New York/hybrid

Eligibility requirements for all internships:

  • Must be a current NAHJ student member 
  • Must be enrolled full-time as a rising junior, senior or master’s student (grad date between Dec 2023 – May 2025) majoring in journalism, broadcasting or communications (preferred majors, other will be considered)
  • Students graduating in May 2023 will not be considered for this program
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without holding a Visa or sponsorship

Three internships are available:

CBS Mornings – NY/Hybrid 

CBS Mornings is the national morning show on CBS, anchored by Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil, and Nate Burleson, Monday through Friday. The broadcast offers a thoughtful, substantive and insightful source of news and information to a daily audience of 3 million viewers. The Emmy Award-winning broadcast presents a mix of daily news, coverage of developing stories of national and global significance, and interviews with leading figures in politics, business and entertainment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting news gathering activities for the broadcast including general assistance to producers and associate producers during production process.
  • Working alongside teams including day of air, medical, features, and/or booking departments.
  • Monitoring and gathering from news wire services, agency material, and various publications.
  • Logging material including interviews, press conferences, trials, b-roll.
  • Pitching stories, strong voices, sources, and visual elements to help tell the story.
  • College credit is not required, appropriate documentation is provided, if needed.

CBS News, 60 Minutes – NY/Hybrid

60 Minutes is a successful broadcast primetime magazine show that is airing its 55th season. Our stories provide hard-hitting investigative reporting that features stories, events, and high-profile people in the news.

Key Internship Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct research and newsgathering for the production team. 
  • Assist teams with logging tapes.
  • Assisting in the field with interview shoots.
  • Selecting footage for stories.

CBS Sports Race & Culture – NY/Hybrid 

The CBS Sports Race & Culture Unit supports all production units creating content for Golf, Soccer, SRX, WNBA, NFL and College football coverage. We also create three, 30-minute Beyond Limits shows for CBS. The Race & Culture Unit also supports CBS Marketing initiatives for Affinity Months and supports production units with idea generation and oversight to make sure our content reflects diversity and sensitivity.

An intern will help the Race & Culture Unit during its busiest time of year as it creates three Beyond Limit shows for June, July and August as well as responsibility for creating content for affinity months content (Mental Health, AAPI, Pride, Juneteenth) on top of shoulder programming for our golf coverage.

Key Internship Responsibilities: 

  • Assisting the Senior Producer in identifying crews, uploading, and editing content created by the Sports Race & Culture Unit. 
  • Creating Vimeo links of content to be shared internally and assisting BA and AP on Beyond Limits and features for affinity months content. 
  • Participating in production meetings with the Features NFL, College Football and Race & Culture units. 
  • Communicating updates with internal groups on production status of content.

Qualifications:

Looking for a candidate interested in storytelling with significant sports knowledge, especially with leagues connected to CBS Sports and ability to conceptualize and pitch story ideas at the intersection of sports, race, and culture. Ideal candidate will be a Journalism/Broadcasting/Communications major. Adobe premiere or editing software experience is a plus.

NAHJ will review applications and submit them to CBS News and CBS Sports for selection. Applicants will be notified in March.
