palabra. is a groundbreaking multimedia platform powered by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ). Our mission is to elevate the voices of Latinos in America by delivering high-quality journalism that reflects the perspectives, stories, and realities of underrepresented communities. At palabra., we create opportunities for freelance journalists to share their local stories and provide an accurate, honest representation of the Latino experience. By supporting independent journalists with developmental assistance and competitive pay, palabra. challenges the traditional media narrative and advocates for an industry that values diversity and inclusion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

The Managing Editor will play a pivotal role in shaping palabra.‘s editorial vision and managing day-to-day operations. This part-time position involves working closely with freelance journalists, contributors, and NAHJ leadership to ensure the platform’s success. Key responsibilities include:

  • Editorial Leadership: Oversee all aspects of palabra.‘s editorial output, including print, video, and audio content. Develop a strong vision for the platform’s future, emphasizing innovation in digital and multimedia storytelling.
  • Story Development: Evaluate and shape story ideas that resonate with a national audience while reflecting palabra.‘s mission. Maintain a publishing schedule of five stories per week, balancing news-driven pieces with in-depth “weekend reads.”
  • Content Oversight: Ensure all content adheres to the highest standards of accuracy, ethical journalism, and professionalism. Monitor for potential libel and ensure compliance with the SPJ Code of Ethics.
  • Team Coordination: Collaborate with freelance journalists, editors, copyeditors, translators, designers, and other contributors. Manage contracts, payments, and workflows to support a seamless production process.
  • Platform Management: Work with the Web team to deliver high-quality content that is visually appealing, accurate, and ready for publication. Coordinate strong social media campaigns to maximize audience engagement.
  • Representation and Collaboration: Represent palabra. in partnerships and collaborations, including initiatives with  other media organizations. 
  • Fundraising and Budgeting: Assist NAHJ’s Executive Director with fundraising efforts and the development of an annual budget to sustain and grow palabra.

Key Qualifications:

  • Professional Experience: At least 7 years of experience in journalism, with a strong background in editing and multimedia storytelling.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor diverse teams of journalists, including freelancers.
  • Editorial Expertise: Sharp editorial judgment and a deep understanding of ethical journalism standards. Experience evaluating and shaping content across various formats (print, video, audio).
  • Organizational Skills: Proven experience managing complex workflows, contracts, and budgets.
  • Bilingual Ability: Fluency in English is required; fluency in Spanish is highly valued.
  • Passion for Mission: Commitment to NAHJ’s mission of advocating for Latino journalists and elevating stories about Latino communities.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with content management systems, social media platforms, and tools like Google Docs for collaborative workflows.
