DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

STATUS: Full-time, salaried, exempt position. 40 hours/week. Reports to the Executive Director.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Primary duties and responsibilities

The Development Director (DD) is responsible for implementing the organization’s fund development strategies to secure enhanced and sustained funding for programs, projects, and operations. The role involves setting annual financial goals and budgets aligned with short- and long-term objectives. The Development Director establishes fundraising objectives for the organization, outlining one-year, five-year, and longer-term goals. Additionally, the DD maintains a comprehensive list of potential financial donors, including corporations, foundations, and individuals. The DD will:

  • In coordination with the Executive Director and the fundraising committee of the governing board of directors, develop annual and multi-year fund development plans to support NAHJ’s mission, goals, programs, and member services.
  • In coordination with staff, be responsible for researching and writing grant proposals to media and non-media foundations, corporations, and funders, subject to the provisions of the NAHJ bylaws and guidelines approved by NAHJ’s governing board of directors.
  • Research and cultivate potential major individual donors to support long-term programs such as scholarships and new NAHJ initiatives.
  • Prepare materials and requests for individual donors.
  • Plan and implement revenue-generating fund campaigns such as direct-mail solicitations and special fundraising events.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and the annual conference co-chairs to develop proposals and secure sponsorships for NAHJ’s annual convention, special events, and special programs, such as The Ruben Salazar Scholarship, the Ñ Awards Annual Gala, and the association’s Adelante Leadership Academy.
  • Work closely with board members, staff, and the general NAHJ membership to identify pathways and cultivate appropriate relationships with individual prospects and donors.
  • Provide staff support to the NAHJ Fundraising Committee.
  • Be responsible for maintaining accurate donor and prospect information and regularly updating the donor database.
  • Be responsible for the timely recognition of donors and acknowledgment of gifts.
  • Provide fundraising training to the NAHJ Board and volunteers, as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, communications, or related fields
  • Minimum of five years of work experience in fundraising with demonstrated results, particularly with major individual donors.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds and write grant proposals.
  • Excellent persuasive communication skills – verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in working with the Hispanic community.
  • Previous experience with association membership, nonprofit organizations, and NGOs
  • Experience with Salesforce or comparable CRMs
  • Experience with grant writing and proposal development
  • Knowledge or interest in journalism a plus
  • Bilingual skills a plus

NAHJ has programs, fellowships and scholarships for students and early-career journalists populating the next generation of storytellers. The organization also works to provide exclusive job opportunities for mid- and late-career journalists and training to equip them with the skills to navigate the changing media technologies, trends and entrepreneurial news models. In recent years, NAHJ has worked to supply members with the tools and avenues to safeguard their emotional and mental health in a stressful industry.
