The National Association of Hispanic Journalists offers its condolences to Gwen Ifill’s family at this difficult time.
Ifill worked as co-anchor of “PBS NewsHour” and hosted “Washington Week.” Ifill was a pioneer for minorities in journalism. She moderated the vice presidential debates in 2004 and 2008. She also moderated a Democratic primary debate in the 2016 race.
NAHJ member and Hall of Famer Ray Suarez worked with Ifill while at “PBS NewsHour.” “She was a standout print journalist before she worked a day in television,” Suarez said. “Then she just went ahead and did outstanding work in a new medium. A best selling author, vice presidential debate moderator, top notch nightly news anchor. She brought excellence to everything she did,” Suarez said.
Ifill was a long-time member of the National Association of Black Journalists. She was inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame in 2012.
She was 61 years old.
