What scholarship applicants should submit:
You must be an NAHJ student to apply. Join at the NAHJ Member site.
Resume One-page resume listing your educational background, work history, awards, journalism related internships, other scholarships, language proficiency and any work done for your school or community newspaper, radio and/or television.
Letters of Recommendation Two references from people who are familiar with your academic and/or journalism work. (Examples: professors, counselors, employers, faculty advisors, etc.) Letters from relatives will not be accepted.
Unofficial School Transcript If you have attended more than one school, an unofficial transcript is required from each institution unless grades from the previous school(s) appear on the present transcript. There is a 2.8 minimum grade point average to qualify for NAHJ scholarships. Academic performance will play a role in deciding which students are awarded scholarships.
Essay Submit an essay of 500 words or less. Please see the instructions that pertain to each scholarship.
These scholarships require essays that relate to a particular career:
• Ada Lourdes Vigo Afro-Latino (English or Spanish) – Explain how being Afro-Latino impacts your storytelling. You may include details on how Afro-Latinos are currently represented.
• Cecilia Alvear/Ana Real (English only) – Explain why you’re interested in a career in journalism working behind the camera.
• María Elena Salinas (English) Explain why you’re interested in a career in journalism.
• María Elena Salinas/Jonathan Camuy (Spanish) – Explain why you’re interested in a career in Spanish-language journalism.
• White House Correspondents’ Association (English only) – Explain why you’re interested in a career covering the White House.
Some of the information you may want to include:
a) Your background
b) The type of journalism you’re interested in
c) Your thoughts on diversity in journalism and why it is important to have Latinos in the newsroom
You may need more than one essay if you’re applying for multiple scholarships.
Work Samples Print, broadcast, audio, photo and/or multimedia work samples. Please limit to three.
a. Work samples may be in English or Spanish.
b. Print samples can be stories written by the applicant that have been published in a high school, college or community newspaper, magazine or online outlet. Applicants should include no more than three clips of published work.
c. Broadcast/audio samples should be no longer than 3 minutes. Please upload a PDF or Word document with the links to your work.
d. Photojournalism samples should be saved as a PDF, or upload a PDF or Word document with links to your work.
