NAHJ will kick off its 40th Anniversary Conference and Expo on July 9, 2024 with a full day of journalism training focused on climate and environmental justice, as well as half-day sessions focused on data journalism and freedom of information.Â
These hands-on sessions are open to all and will be held at the Loews Hollywood Hotel, the conference venue in Los Angeles. NAHJ is inviting journalists, journalism students as well as members of the public interested in environmental issues and/or journalism to attend.
The all day “Climate and Environmental Justice Coverage Workshop” will be led by top science/environmental journalists from publications such as The New York Times, the LA Times, and The Associated Press. At the same time, NAHJ is offering a choice of half-day sessions on data journalism, digital storytelling, or accessing public data.
“Journalists of all backgrounds need expertise in covering climate change as it impacts more and more sectors,” said NAHJ President Yvette Cabrera, herself an award-winning environmental journalist. “It’s also important to recognize that environmental issues such as pollution disproportionately affect communities of color.”
The day’s programming also includes a three-hour “IntroducciĂłn al periodismo de datos” in Spanish.Â
The day’s training costs $50 for general admission — with discounted rates available for NAHJ members — and no cost for students. It’s free for people who register for the annual conference, which runs through July 13, 2024. Learn more and sign up.
