The National Association of Hispanic Journalists Announces Revamped Communications Strategy

Tapiz Media Group selected as the Agency of Record for Communications and Social Media, Iván Briones hired as Director of Communications

Washington, D.C., March 6, 2023 – The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) has announced the selection of Tapiz Media Group as their Agency of Record for communications and social media and Iván Briones as Director of Communications  as part of the organizations revamped strategic communications strategy effective March 1, 2023.

Tapiz Media Group, led by NAHJ lifetime members Daniel Morales and José “Pepe” Xicohténcatl, has been the agency of record for U.S. Hispanic communications for Google and YouTube for seven consecutive years, successfully managing communications campaigns in the fields of technology, entertainment, arts & culture, and public affairs. Previous marketing and communications work includes GoFundMe, Lexus, NASCAR, and Powerade.

“The revamped NAHJ communication strategy is part of a five-year plan that will strengthen the organization’s mission of increasing the number of Latinos in newsrooms and work toward fair and accurate representation of Latinos in news media,” said David Peña Jr., NAHJ Executive Director.

Along with contracting Tapiz Media Group, NAHJ hired multilingual communications professional Iván Briones from San Antonio, TX as the organization’s national Director of Communications. Briones will oversee timely and effective internal communications with NAHJ’s membership, regional leaders and both professional and student chapters across the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico.

With a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from St. Mary’s University and experience in journalism and social media communications, Briones previously served as the City Editor of SATXtoday, where he delivered relevant local news and events to subscribers and organically grew the company’s Instagram by more than 21,000 followers in 18 months; averaging 886,000 accounts reached over a 90-day period through strategic and engaging content creation.

The strategic communications revamp will set up the organization as it prepares to welcome its 40th annual convention in 2024.
