ABOUT NAHJ
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that acts as a support group for Hispanic professional and student journalists who work in the English and Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast and online media. NAHJ was established in 1984 and has a membership of over 3,700 throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
OVERVIEW
The Communications Intern will support the NAHJ’s communications team in executing various projects and initiatives. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in social media management, content creation and strategic communications. The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter with a passion for social media, journalism, excellent communication skills, and a strong interest in advocating for diversity in the media.
KEY RESPONSIBILITES
The NAHJ intern will join the Communications Team and gain hands-on experience in social media, content creation,and digital engagement. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful campaigns, support key initiatives, and help amplify NAHJ’s mission. Responsibilities include:
- Support the management and content creation for NAHJ’s social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, X, Facebook, etc.), including the creation of graphics and editing of short videos such as reels.
- Assist in the promotion of the NAHJ Summits in Puerto Rico and Los Angeles, and the third annual Excelencia Awards, among other initiatives that promote our programs and members
- Conduct research and find the latest social media trends to support communications campaigns and initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of communication strategies to enhance NAHJ’s visibility and engagement.
- Collaborate with team members on various projects to ensure cohesive messaging and branding.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the communications team.

- Assist in drafting, editing and distributing press releases, newsletters, and other communication materials.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We’re looking for a passionate and driven intern eager to gain hands-on experience in media communications while supporting NAHJ’s mission. The ideal candidate should have a strong interest in journalism, media, and advocacy for diversity in the news industry. Ideal candidates should:
- Be current enrollment in or recent graduate from a communications, journalism, public relations, or related program.
- Show strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrate proficiency in social media platforms and content management systems.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace is required; familiarity with Buffer
- Proficiency with Adobe Express, Adobe Premiere, CapCut, or other video editing software
- Understand basic knowledge of media relations and public relations practices.
- Hold excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Value the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Share a passion for journalism, media, and diversity in the news industry.
- Being bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
