Empowering Journalists with AI and Tech Innovation

Join NAHJ for “Empowering Journalists with AI and Tech Innovation,” our first webinar of the year geared toward Next Gen. members. Our trainer, Rafelli González-Cotto, will demonstrate how you can best use AI for content creation and what pitfalls to avoid. González-Cotto is also a lawyer, so he’ll include some of the legal and ethical aspects of using AI.

Trainer: Rafelli González-Cotto, Digital Reporter, Lawyer and Professor, Universidad del Sagrado Corazón

Bio: Mr. Rafelli González-Cotto entered the communications industry in 2009 after completing with honors a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications Media Production, an associate degree in digital photography, minors in Media Writing, Photography and Media Integration from the Interamerican University, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

During his career, he has performed almost all the functions inherent to the profession in both analog and digital media outlets, as well as broadcast for radio and television. After several years working for a local newspaper and a media relations firm specialized in sports, he became a digital journalist for the leading national newspaper El Nuevo Día in 2014. In 2017, he was named the Executive Digital Director at Latin Media House, where he developed the Spanish version of Caribbean Business online publications. In 2022, he held the Digital Multiplatform Director position at El Vocero national newspaper, a place that allowed him to venture into the world of Artificial Intelligence thanks to a grant awarded by the Associated Press Local News Initiative to develop an “open source” project that integrates AI into stories about weather alerts.

In 2018 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Journalists Association (Asppro, in Spanish), where he currently holds the Secretary position. He also sits as a voting member of the Press Credentials Committee at the Puerto Rico Department of State.

Currently, he is a professor at the Ferré Rangel School of Communication at the University of the Sacred Heart, where he trains students in Digital Data Visualization and Multimedia Storytelling. He is a lawyer by profession and a journalist by heart, which is why he has filed multiple legal claims to defend the right of Free Speech and access to public information at both state and federal courts.
