Letter from the President on Elections

April 2, 2018

Dear Members,

Today, we will begin the call for nominations for our 2018 national board election. I hope that each of you will be active and engaged in the process, to ensure our association continues our strong momentum in the future.

I want to share with you some very important news regarding the election and campaigning. Over the weekend, the national board passed Campaign Guidelines and an Executive Code of Conduct. Both of these policies go into effect immediately. The national board and staff worked with our legal team Covington & Burling LLP, in Washington D.C. on these policies.

The purpose for these Campaign Guidelines is to ensure our campaigning process is professional. We also want to ensure the candidates will uphold the integrity of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists on all platforms. Candidates running for office must adhere to the Executive Code of Conduct.

The board also voted to empower the elections committee to investigate reported violations and give the committee the authority to take any action it deems necessary. All decisions by the committee are final.

This year’s Elections Committee members are:

Nancy Flores, Elections Chair, National Board Secretary

Rafael MejĂa, Region 1 Director

Paula Machado, Region 4 Director

Dianna Náñez, Region 7 Director

Brian De Los Santos, Region 8 Director

I thank them for their time and dedication to ensure a fair and professional election cycle.  It has been my honor to serve as President and I look forward to our NAHJ 2018 International Training Conference and Career Fair in Miami this July.

Sincerely,

Brandon Benavides
NAHJ President
