Create Powerful Partnerships for NAHJ 2018 Conference
Washington, D.C., January 29, 2018 – The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is pleased to announce official training partners for the upcoming International Training Conference and Career Fair July 18-21, 2018 in Miami, Florida.
“With this ambitious training agenda, NAHJ is helping to ensure that journalists today are prepared to meet the rapidly changing ways that people are consuming and sharing news and information. It is in keeping with NAHJ’s longtime commitment to empowering journalists and informing diverse communities,” said Jennifer Preston, Knight Foundation vice president for journalism.
“The training partners we have curated for this year’s conference are not simply interesting and educational, but provide training that we are confident journalists and newsroom managers alike, will identify as worthwhile and much needed,” commented Alberto B. Mendoza, NAHJ Executive Director. “Working over a period of time to bring together these partners has been a very intentional effort to fulfill our association’s commitment in bringing the best curriculum and access to higher education for our members.”
With support from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, these official training partners: The Education Writers Association (EWA), Media Law Resource Center Institute (MLRC Institute), Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) and Latino Public Radio Consortium (LPRC), offer opportunity for Spanish-language journalists to access key issues and hands-on training that range from education to media law, investigative reporting and more. This will be the first time the organizations are partnering with NAHJ to provide training for national conference participants.
“EWA is delighted to bring its popular training for members of the Spanish-language media to the NAHJ conference in 2018,” commented Caroline Hendrie, the executive director of the Education Writers Association. “We deeply appreciate the contributions of our Spanish-speaking members, and we are pleased to join forces with NAHJ to offer a program for journalists who want to improve how they cover the critically important topic of education.”
“There are so legal many issues which all journalists should be aware of – libel, invasion of privacy, newsgathering torts, digital law, FOIA, etc,” noted George Freeman, Executive Director, Media Law Resource Center Institute. “We thought it vital that these journalists, who don’t have the benefit of a corporate legal department’s training program, should be given a day-long course on the fundamentals and practicalities of media law.”
“We’re committed to strengthening Latino public media stations & Latino public media professionals  by providing essential tools to help them enhance their work within the public media space”, explained LPRC Executive Director, Magaly Rivera. “This is a natural partnership. The NAHJ is working to get more Latinos in news, and we are working to get more Latinos in public media, which is a crucial part of the news landscape.”
“IRE is excited to partner with NAHJ for a special watchdog training. NAHJ members who haven’t had a chance to receive IRE training will benefit from practical tips and tools that they can use immediately in their newsrooms,” IRE Executive Director Doug Haddix said. “Investigative reporting will benefit in communities across America as more journalists are trained to dig through documents and data to hold powerful people and institutions accountable.”
