Former NAHJ Presidential Award Recipient Ciprian-Matthews named CBS News’ Washington Bureau Chief
(Washington, D.C.) – NAHJ is ecstatic to learn award-winning CBS News executive Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews has been named the executive vice president and CBS News Washington bureau chief. She has managed teams worldwide and held several senior management leadership roles in news. Through her experience with the Washington bureau, Ciprian-Matthews has provided countless news coverage on natural disasters, terrorist attacks, political events, and international conflicts. More recently, she was responsible for CBS News’ campaign coverage such as Election Night, CBS News Decision Desk, and presidential debates.
Ciprian-Matthews is not only an Emmy award-winning journalist, but she is a former National Association of Hispanic Journalists Presidential Award of Impact recipient. Looking to her as a role model, Ciprian-Matthews’ achievement of being named CBS News Washington bureau chief impacts Latino journalists who wish to grow and develop in media-related professions.
As a part of CBS News’ senior executive leadership team, she has worked to implement initiatives focused on broadening and enhancing CBS News’ culture. In doing so, she has greatly influenced the employment opportunities and career development of Hispanics in the news media.
NAHJ has worked diligently with CBS News over the past years to address representation issues in the newsroom. In the summer of 2020, the NAHJ declared its support for Ciprian-Matthews “appointment and expressed great optimism about the final outcome.
The national association welcomes Ingrid’s appointment as CBS News Washington bureau chief, which reflects a promising future of more diverse and inclusive newsrooms. It is evident that our organization’s fundamental concern to empower Hispanic journalists is becoming a shared and consistent priority within the CBS News network and leadership. As the Washington bureau chief, Ciprian-Matthews will hold responsibility for the Network’s largest bureau’s management and newsgathering. This bureau is the home to the CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell and Face The Nation.
Ciprian-Matthews has played a vital role and created a lasting leadership role in molding CBS News’s culture. With her new position, she has even more tremendous potential to foster understanding of Hispanic journalists’ cultural identity and interest. NAHJ is confident that Ingrid will continue to significantly impact diversity within the media and bring awareness to important news in Hispanic communities.
