NAHJ Remembers José Suárez

August 20, 2026 — The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is heartbroken by the passing of our dear friend and colleague, José Suárez.

José was part of the NAHJ family, and his loss is deeply felt by so many of us. For more than 25 years, he dedicated his life to journalism and helping to tell the stories that matter to our communities.

José’s story is one of passion, hard work and a deep commitment to Hispanic journalism. Born in Florida, he started his career the way so many of us did: behind a microphone, in front of a camera and with a genuine desire to create stories important to our communities.

From those early days as a reporter and anchor, José’s journey took him into leadership, where he became a trusted and respected voice in Hispanic media.

Suarez, 55, was President and General Manager of Telemundo 31 in Orlando, Telemundo 49 in Tampa and Telemundo Fort Myers-Naples in Florida when he and six others died Wednesday in a helicopter crash in Kenya.

Previously, he served as President and General Manager of several Telemundo stations, including Telemundo 33 in Sacramento, Telemundo Fresno, Telemundo Las Vegas, Telemundo Utah and Telemundo San Antonio.

But for those who knew José, his legacy goes far beyond his leadership titles.

“He was someone who believed in people, in the power of our stories and in the importance of creating opportunities for others,” said NAHJ President Dunia Elvir. “He understood that leadership was not only about running a newsroom, but also about opening doors and helping others find their own path.”

José touched many lives throughout his career. His kindness, friendship and commitment to our profession will be deeply missed.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, colleagues and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

During this difficult time, we share the love and support of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

José, you will be missed, you will be remembered. You will always be part of our NAHJ family.

José, ¡Siempre te recordaremos!

Sincerely,
Board of Directors
National Association of Hispanic Journalists
